Screwed Up

I have two dogs. I've raised them since they were pups. I love them dearly, and they are a lot of work. They have their idiiocyncracies, and my life revolves around when they need to pee, poop and eat. This was not part of my life goal. It must have been Somebody's plan, though, for it has taught me much about patience, tolerance, unconditional positive regard, and love.

But my dogs do make mistakes. My little one loves to drag dirty towels all over the house where I am constantly picking them up. The bigger one is a barker and gets the little one going over just about anything. They make too much noise and too much mess and it seems they always want something especially when I am trying to do something for myself.

But you know what? When I get frustrated, irritated or annoyed with them, it really never is their fault. It is my own. It is my own for letting them go too long without giving them the attention they need and deserve. When I took on the responsibility for dogs, I did that with the understanding and awareness that they depend upon me for everything - even more than children. They cannot entertain themselves when they are bored like children can. That is why they get into trouble. They cannot eat, eliminate or even get water without me. Their dependence is total and complete, and while that may get on my nerves from time to time, it is not their fault. It is the nature of the beast - as we, mankind, have made them.

For dogs are, indeed, man-made. Rooted in the nature of the wolf, we have genetically manipulated these creatures until they absolutely cannot fend for themselves; and overbred and overpopulated them until we have a major holocaust going when it comes to unwanted, uncared for dogs.

And we, as humans, consider ourselves to be superior - the "intelligent" species. If we are, indeed, "higher beings," we are responsible for the power that we wield on any level. If we can't even manage what we know about genetics to properly care for dogs, what on earth makes us think that human genetic manipulation is a worthwhile cause?

Yes, all dogs should go to Heaven - and I hope there is no dog poop there. :) As for the rest of us? All bets are off.
