Naked Man
By Wolfgang Glinka
It was a fourth floor apartment in the Lower East Side.
Fire escapes to the street, New York style.
Jump the last bit to stop intruders,
Tenements dressed in steel.
Inside gentility, literary
Buddhist,
Incense, chimes and books.
Lotus position, smiles, deep breathed calm,
A world apart from below.
Then, at the window, the naked man.
Pleased to see me smile soon fades.
Not wanted, he knows that, knew it,
But too high to just turn and go.
An old romance reduced to this.
The sad, pained face of the poet-priest,
The crazed, desperate, naked man,
Both held their past in one last look.
Don’t jump,
Don’t howl,
Accept the pain.
Great love can end like this.
